Tyron was born on April 17, 1982 in Ferguson, Missouri. He was the eleventh of the thirteen children of Sylvester and Deborah Woodley. He attended McCluer High School in 2000 and graduated from Mizzou in 2005 with major in Agricultural Economics. Tyron’s MMA career started when he walked into a local MMA gym. The owner trained him a little and put his match on the card. His first amateur fight lasted only 20 seconds and collected a perfect 7-0 record in amateur bouts.
Woodley’s professional UFC career started on February 2, 2013 where he faced Jay Jieron. He won the fight via KO in just 36 seconds. His first defeat came on June 15, 2013 where he lost the fight via split decision to Jake Shields. On October 3, 2015 at UFC 192, Woodley was expected to face Johny Hendricks but Hendricks was forced out of the fight due to complications with weight cutting. After year-and-a half break, he faced welterweight champion Robbie Lawler on July 30, 2016. He won the match via knockout halfway through the first round to claim UFC Welterweight Championship.
Woodley then made his first title defense against Stephen Thompson on November 12, 2016. The fight was entertaining and ended in a majority draw with two judges scoring the fight 47-47 and the third 48-47 in favor of Woodley. The decision was then given in favor of Woodley retaining the championship. The rematch between Tyron and Stephen is set to take place on March 4, 2017 at UFC 209.
